telvarost has made an awesome version of this mod (link) that uses Babric, "a project bringing fabric to your beta Minecraft version."
The upside of using Babric is that no base classes need to be edited. Fabric is also a very popular way of modding current Minecraft versions so applying its philosophy to Minecraft Beta is a good idea as well.
Along with the merge, some changes will have to be made to make telvarosts version feature-complete, i.e. adding pick block functionality.

It has been decided not to upstream the fixes, instead making it a separate mod using Babric. This will be dubbed the modloader edition.
