Unable to get the BaseModelTest working

Vamsi, looks to me like you have not configured ActiveJPA properly. BaseModelTest doesn't load the entity manager. You will have to do it explicitly in the sub classes like below.

public class MyModelTest extends BaseModelTest {

@BeforeClass
public void beforeClass() {
    JPA.instance.addPersistenceUnit("test");
}

}

Let me know if works for you. Unfortunately this is not documented. I will add this to the documentation.

Here is the correct documentation:
Add a persistence.xml under Meta-INF folder which includes all the classes.

<persistence-unit name="test" transaction-type="RESOURCE_LOCAL">

    <class>com.project.domain.OrderItem</class>

    <properties>
        <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.driver" value="org.hsqldb.jdbcDriver" />
        <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.url" value="jdbc:hsqldb:mem:." />
        <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.user" value="sa" />
        <property name="javax.persistence.jdbc.password" value="" />
        <property name="hibernate.show_sql" value="true" />
        <property name="hibernate.dialect" value="org.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect"/>
        <property name="hibernate.connection.shutdown" value="true"/>

Then do as Ganesh did above. Then it works!
