Proposal:

Create a survey for the Working group or anyone interested in taking it.

Objectives:

to be discussed in this issue.

Motivation:

Understanding the mixture of people (domains/experience/knowledge/insights/etc) can greatly guide us toward our achievable goals instead of dispersion our efforts in various niches at the beginning.

I very much agree. Most important in my opinion should be :

  • working in industry ? (yes -> which company ?)
  • how do you want to help the working group ? (crate development, industry outreach, knowledge building, not sure, ... with multiple possible answers ofc)
  • contact info

A bit misleading @MagixInTheAir ... But we can work with this! We can divide the questions a bit more, as we are Rust orientated and also people might have worked before on something like a cubesat, plane, etc.
So I would say something along the lines of:

  • Working with Rust? / Experience
  • Working/Worked in Aerospace? What area? (space, ground, data, astronomy, airplanes, drones, embedded in general etc.)
  • Are you interested in mentoring/working on projects
  • Are you interested in organizational work/communication/etc.
  • Do you have technical experience
  • Do you have any other experience in aerospace (materials/chemistry, system architecture, data processing, etc.)
  • Why are you particularly interested in AeroRust working group?
    • Open-source solutions
    • Space hardware solutions
    • Space software solutions
    • Becoming an astronaut(?)
    • Exploration
    • Embedded systems
    • Tools (for data analysis, processing, testing, protocol parsing, etc)
    • ... ?

We've managed the keep it as simple as possible, leave enough for people to express whatever they want and to get to know them.

How long should this go before we compile the results ?

IMO I think we should leave the survey opened for a full year. This way we can see how our community is growing.
We can compile some results on particular time to see what is the progress through the year.
