pg_receivexlog on a replica

I have configured pghoard to be backing up from a replica, but it does not seem to be working.

When I trigger a pg_switch_xlog on the master, I see the replica switching over to the new log, but pghoard does not seem to register the fact he replica has switched to a new wal.

Is it possible that pg_receivexlog is not expected to work on a replica, and I should be using archiving only?

I haven't tried running it from standby in years but it should work just fine.
