[MD+] Sonic 3D Blast (Director's Cut)

As per subject line

It's been a while, sorry for the delay.
I have the soundtrack and a disassembly of Sonic3Dblast, so I will start looking into it in the next couple of days.

There's a director's cut of Sonic 3D Blast that was released a couple years ago by Jon Burton (who was the founder of Traveller's Tales). He did a complete overhaul to the game, improving it immensely. The downside is, any current disassemblies for it may not apply to the Director's Cut, but it may be worth looking into too. It may even be possible to contact him for at least information on getting a MD+/MSU-MD patch going if things have changed too much and the disassembly doesn't work for it. Thoughts?

There's a director's cut of Sonic 3D Blast

Thanks for this. I guess the changes in the sound driver will be minimal, but I'll have a look.

Oh, the patched game is already 32MBIT and has only 2622 bytes left to use. I'll see if I can work with that.

The remaining space seems sufficient, though I had to drop my custom intro and lockout screen.
I already have the stages muted and playing test-files via MD+.
Now I'd like to ask, if you could compare the CD audio tracks (02 - 25) from the Saturn against the sound test in the Director's Cut and make a list, which track ID from the sound test corresponds to the Saturn music.

Since the sound test has $1C tracks (That's 28) and the Saturn has 24 CD audio tracks, I wonder what is missing - presumably some jingles that may need recording from the Saturn side.

Sure, I can do that. Off the top of my head I do know with the Saturn soundtrack that both Rusty Ruin Zone's and Volcano Valley Zone's Act 1 and Act 2 music are reversed in the Saturn CD's track order.

I'll go through the Director's Cut here in a bit and do the comparison between it, the original and the Saturn version and match those to the track numbers. :)

Don't forget that if this gets going, there's an audio pack already edited/looped, found at the link below. It can be re-arranged if need be when the track list gets finalised.

So far I was able to compile this list...

Saturn CD Track Order:

02 = Title Screen
03 = Game Over
04 = Boss
05 = Green Grove Zone Act 1
06 = Green Grove Zone Act 2
07 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 2
08 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1
09 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 1
10 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 2
11 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 2
12 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 1
13 = Diamond Dust Zone Act 1
14 = Diamond Dust Zone Act 2
15 = Gene Gadget Zone Act 1
16 = Gene Gadget Zone Act 2
17 = Panic Puppet Zone Act 1
18 = Panic Puppet Zone Act 2
19 = Special Stage
20 = Final Fight
21 = Speed Up (Power Sneakers)
22 = Invincibility
23 = Act Clear
24 = Continue
25 = Credits (You're My Hero)

Genesis (Original & Director's Cut) Sound Test Order:

BGM 01 = Green Grove Zone Act 1
BGM 02 = Green Grove Zone Act 2
BGM 03 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1
BGM 04 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 2
BGM 05 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 2
BGM 06 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 1
BGM 07 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 1
BGM 08 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 2
BGM 09 = Diamond Dust Zone Act 1
BGM 0A = Diamond Dust Zone Act 2
BGM 0B = Gene Gadget Zone Act 1
BGM 0C = Gene Gadget Zone Act 2
BGM 0D = Panic Puppet Zone Act 2
BGM 0E = Final Fight
BGM 0F = Ending
BGM 10 = Special Stage
BGM 11 = Panic Puppet Zone Act 1
BGM 12 = Boss 2
BGM 13 = Boss 1
BGM 14 = Opening
BGM 15 = Credits
BGM 16 = Game Over
BGM 17 = Continue
BGM 18 = Act Clear
BGM 19 = 1-Up
BGM 1A = Chaos Emerald
BGM 1B = Invincibility
BGM 1C = Main Menu

The Genesis version does have music the Saturn version doesn't, like a second boss track. Probably going to have to use the same track for both bosses. 1-Up and Chaos Emerald tracks are likely fine as-is in this case, they're inherited from Sonic 3.

@Relikk That ready-to-go Saturn soundtrack audio pack linked above has an issue (which I think I've mentioned before, can't remember). Anyways both Rusty Ruin Zone and Volcano Valley Zone on the Saturn disc have both the Act 1 and Act 2 tracks reversed. Act 2 is actually first in the track order, then Act 1. Likewise the files in the audio pack are mislabeled...

5-RustyRuinZone_Act1.wav is actually Rusty Ruin Zone Act 2
6-RustyRuinZone_Act2.wav is actually Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1
11-VolcanoValleyZone_Act1.wav is actually Volcano Valley Zone Act 2
12-VolcanoValleyZone_Act2.wav is actually Volcano Valley Zone Act 1

Thank you both for the input. I can work with that.

I'd suggest to use this track order.
I haven't looked into Relikk's soundPack yet - does it have the same amount of tracks as there are Music-IDs?

BGM 01 = Green Grove Zone Act 1
BGM 02 = Green Grove Zone Act 2
BGM 03 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 1
BGM 04 = Rusty Ruin Zone Act 2
BGM 05 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 2
BGM 06 = Volcano Valley Zone Act 1
BGM 07 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 1
BGM 08 = Spring Stadium Zone Act 2
BGM 09 = Diamond Dust Zone Act 1
BGM 0A = Diamond Dust Zone Act 2
BGM 0B = Gene Gadget Zone Act 1
BGM 0C = Gene Gadget Zone Act 2
BGM 0D = Panic Puppet Zone Act 2
BGM 0E = Final Fight
BGM 0F = Ending
BGM 10 = Special Stage
BGM 11 = Panic Puppet Zone Act 1
BGM 12 = Boss 2
BGM 13 = Boss 1
BGM 14 = Opening
BGM 15 = Credits
BGM 16 = Game Over
BGM 17 = Continue
BGM 18 = Act Clear
BGM 19 = 1-Up
BGM 1A = Chaos Emerald
BGM 1B = Invincibility
BGM 1C = Main Menu

Another question about the game I had was, is there a situation like in Sonic 1/2/3 when you get the sneakers and the music speeds up?

No, the Genesis version has extra tracks.

BGM 12 and BGM 13 can both use the same Boss track from the Saturn version (since the Saturn version only has one anyways).

The Genesis version has music on the main menu (BGM 1C), the Saturn version does not. However, track 02 (Title Screen) might be a good substitute here since the Genesis version doesn't have music on the title screen.

BGM 14 doesn't have an equivalent with the Saturn version, as the Saturn version doesn't have that opening cutscene. But this one can probably be left as-is, it's short interlude as far as I know.

BGM 19 and BGM 1A likely should stay the same too, they're sound effects reused from Sonic 3.

Another question about the game I had was, is there a situation like in Sonic 1/2/3 when you get the sneakers and the music speeds up?

Yes it does. The Saturn version has its own power sneakers music but the Genesis version does not, it speeds up the level track. Maybe the power sneakers track from the Saturn version can be reused for something else?

If that's ok I'd like to go that route. Playing another track while having sneaker-power is definitely easier than calculating a seek-frame for the speed up track.

Sure, that'd be great actually. :D

Oh wow, nice work man! ๐Ÿฅ‡

Indeed, I remember.

I've updated the pack with the correct track listing, and I've also found and added the missing tracks. The opening, ending, chaos emerald and 1-up. Luckily the opening and ending are in AVI format on the original Saturn disc. The chaos emerald and 1-up were hidden in BIN files in the SOUND folder, at low bit and sample rates.

It can be found in the Mega folder containing the rest of the completed/WIP packs, here: https://mega.nz/folder/5MlkSBqR#ZzodSLacnwV3d9I6mGiYLw
