viz.py runs and exits with no display

I followed the instructions in the README for running the vizualizer code in a separate terminal. When I execute python viz.py I get no output for several seconds, then the process exits.

I am able to run viz.py when I run it in my system's Python 3 environment. The problem only occurs when I run viz.py in the virtualenv.
