Image to points does not work with variables

If I give the image to points node a direct path like
/path/to/image01.png
everything works as expected.

However, including a variable such as
path/to/image$F2.png
does not work. The image returned is a solid color.

The animation example HIP also does not work.

Are there workarounds for this?
