related to this, I found that linking to libtarsnap.a was not enough, I needed tarsnap_sse2.a as well.

I think when I wrote the library you could not actually download scrypt as a library, so at the time you probably had to download tarsnap.

If I remember correctly, the reason I ask is that the license for scrypt on its own is a lot more liberal than for tarsnap as a whole

Ah okay. Well, the docs should probably be updated to explain how you can use it merely with scrypt.
