Couple suggestions from discussion today:

  • add a boolean-typed datatype property (brick:isAlias?) to mark the alias classes
  • keep the non-canonical classes for now, but infer the canonical classes using SHACL shapes. Don't mark them as deprecated for now

I'd love to get @steveraysteveray opinion on a best practice for designating an alias - is there something better than us making up a new brick:isAlias property?

We have run into the need for this many times in the QUDT ontology, and use qudt:exactMatch to indicate that two URIs really mean the same concept. Designed to mimic skos:exactMatch in some (but not all) ways, qudt:exactMatch allows QUDT to deliver multiple representations of the same concept in a machine-approachable way. One common example for QUDT is the "common interpretation" versus the "pedantically correct interpretation", such as:

  • quantitykind:Angle = quantitykind:PlaneAngle (because there is also quantitykind:SolidAngle)
  • quantitykind:Acceleration = quantitykind:LinearAcceleration (because there is also quantitykind:AngularAcceleration)
    Our approach has been to define the common (yet ambiguous) term as an exact match with the more pedantic (and unambiguous) term.

Also, some concepts are just known by different terms:

  • quantitykind:ElectricDisplacement = quantitykind:ElectricFluxDensity
  • unit:AMU (Atomic Mass Unit) = unit:Da (Dalton) = unit:U (Unified Atomic Mass Unit)
  • unit:J (Joule) = unit:NM (Newton Metre)

The reasons we don't just use skos:exactMatch are:

  1. We have control over the assumptions, now and in the future
  2. the SKOS mapping relations "are used to state mapping (alignment) links between SKOS concepts in different concept schemes". see https://www.w3.org/TR/skos-reference/#mapping, so this is one example of a case where qudt:exactMatch doesn't mean quite the same thing as skos:exactMatch, since we use it to relate concepts within the same ontology.
  3. The alternatives are not precisely identical in our model, since they have distinct descriptions and labels (for example), but semantically they are equivalent.

So bottom line, we don't try to identify the "canonical" term if there are popular alternatives.

I really like the distinction you drew between "common" and "pedantically correct" definitions --- I think that characterizes much of what we're dealing with in Brick (and 223P!).

Are there any rules / semantics associated with qudt:exactMatch? I see from https://qudt.org/schema/qudt/exactMatch that it is a subproperty of owl:sameAs, but I don't know if you're using those semantics for QUDT.

For Brick, to enforce canonical identifiers, we might do "one way" inference: uses of the common terms are inferred to be their preferred, canonical equivalents; but we do not infer the common terms from the canonical terms.

As we move toward considering the SHACL schema as the master schema for QUDT, the link between qudt:exactMatch and owl:sameAs disappears. In fact, we don't think of them as identical, as I mentioned above.

Your one-way approach for the canonical terms sounds reasonable.
