Sorting options data (Mar. 1st - Apr. 30th, 2021)

Pageviews Unique Pageviewes Avg. time on page Bounce Rate Exit %
/p/ 111382 60877 0:00:30 15.70% 6.33%
/e/ 4579 2345 0:00:19 6.79% 4.66%
/a/ 1417 897 0:00:24 9.42% 7.87%

Findings

  • Alphabetical sorting is not particularly well-received.
  • Sorting options other than popularity have higher exit rates.
  • Expertise and alphabetical sorting are a tiny fraction of the total pageviews (~5%).
  • Average time on page is 20-36% lower in non-popularity sorted listings.
  • Entrances for non-popularity sorted listings are very low (not displayed in the data).

Concerns

  • Various guidelines suggest to avoid alphabetical sorting.
  • Expertise sorting is not transparent enough.
  • The sorting options UI feels clunky and is not necessarily useful in many cases.
  • Build times are significantly impacted by the creation of sorting options.
  • Removal of any sorting options will require adding dozens of redirect rules.
