No serial connection on RS-485 port 1, only eavesdropping possible

Hi,
Just setup this script to read out my Hewalex PCWU through an Elfin EW-11a serial to WiFi adapter.
This is working fine if I piggyback the controller on RS-485 port 2, but only for the status registers. The configuration registers most of the time don't update when piggybacking and thus I cannot change the settings.
I've set the serial settings to Baud 38400 with addresses set to 2 for physical and logical.
When I connect the RS-485 to WiFi adapter on the empty RS-485 port (port 1) (so no piggybacking), no bytes are read at all.
Is there some kind of resistor or trigger needed to get this working? In the Ekontrol-LAN manual they mention adding a resistor.
Any clue on what to look for in the code?
