server-side and edit window only comments

Sometimes we use comments in the plain text of a page to keep track of templates and other CL page organisational things. Most people won't notice, but if you looked at our page source you might see stuff that shouldn't be seen by end users. Perhaps we could have a comment notation that we can use which will get stripped out of the page content before it is served to the client.

Sounds like overkill. Why should it not get shown to end users in the html? If it really should not, then it should not be in there at all, because our etherpads are still unsecured. There is a chat section on the etherpads if you want to record stuff that does not come out in the html of the site pages.
