Expanding search box is difficult to use

When I click on the box, and go to type, when I look back it has moved from where I expected it to be, as the box has expanded to the left. I find this really frustrating to use.

well, we can keep it small, but obviously then you cannot see so much in it. if we make it permanently large, we severely restrict the amount of nav we can nicely display by default.
