Crystal Vulcanizer has issues seeing external inputs

When first placed, and when given an external input upgrade, the Crystal Vulcanizer does not recognize anything in the external input storage. Removing and re-adding the external input upgrade seems to jog the machine into recognizing external storage, however.
Steps to reproduce:
- Place a vulcanizer
- Place a chest next to the vulcanizer
- Put an external input upgrade into the vulcanizer
- Put some ore into the chest
At this point, nothing happens. However, removing and replacing the external input upgrade will fix things.
