Formalize my pledges

e.g. on

  • open science
  • reviewing
  • all-male panels
    etc.

Just had a conversation with my colleagues Phil and Arlyn around how our institution (the Data Science Institute at the University of Virginia) could become more systematic about operationalizing our core values, which include openness and diversity. So I expect to serve as a guinea pig and flesh this out, with input from existing initiatives or individual pledges in this space, e.g. the Open Principles for Science and Education or Erin McKiernan's pledge.

I should probably open a dedicated file for this.

Some more thoughts on the matter:
The pledge should

  • be modular and easily forkable
  • versioned
  • openly licensed
  • have some obligatory components
  • allow for publicly documented exceptions
  • cover all aspects of research, teaching and academic community service
  • be integrated into strategies around hiring, promotion, diversity, FAIR etc.
  • contain provisions for regular (yearly or so) review

I have started https://github.com/Daniel-Mietchen/datascience/blob/master/pledges.md and will transfer content from this ticket over there in the next few days.

Actually, may be better to have the pledges in an easily forkable repo of their own.

Issues related to pledges: pledges

I think that repo at https://github.com/Daniel-Mietchen/pledges is now sufficiently formalized, and it has been forked twice already. So closing this ticket.
