Rename BeakerOS

Closed this issue · 3 comments

Unfortunately, the word "beaker" is already associated with https://github.com/beakerbrowser.

It's tough, (who likes bikeshedding, anyone?), but we need to think of a different name for BeakerOS long-term.

Any suggestions are welcome!

I guess the name beaker reflects how potentially dangerous chemicals can react inside of it, without hurting the chemist or leaking into the environment. Similar names (or in the same vibe) include:

  • Flask (already a Python web framework).
  • Retort (a type of flask) [nbp]
  • Cassia (a type of flask and also a cinnamon) [nbp]
  • Dewar (another name for a Thermo) [nbp]
  • Baffle (a type of bioreactor, already a javascript library)
  • Sparger (a type of bioreactor) [nbp]

[nbp] = no big project on github with this name

Straying from the chemical analogy would open the search space further but increase the chances of a name clash will all the containerization projects.

To be honest, Beaker was more or less a placeholder - I'm not too invested the chemical analogy. Sparger sounds cool.

Another direction would be renaming procedures as well. What they are called so far doesn't give much insight of what they do, a better decision would be to define a new subcategory of smart contracts instead: A "insert adjective here contract". We could then rename Beaker to better fit the name of procedures as well.
