this component was installed in /config/custom_components/lifx-beta (where /config is /home/pi/.homeassistant)

It's smart enough to only allow you to override a core integration in a very specific way, which includes maintaining the namespace of that integration. 😉

i thought HASS was looking in manifest.json for name and/or domain and that folder name does not matter 🤷🏻‍♂️

It has to match in all locations. Folder name, manifest.json and within the code itself.
