Subgrid mixing: ideas for enhancements

Vorticity inversion at higher resolution (note, this does not require space-filling like the buoyancy field does).
-
Enhanced (stochastic) merging and splitting
-
Parcels with a dilution factor, which slowly grow in volume, keeping product volume*dilution. Merging based on dilution as well as other factors. Dilution/expansion rate informed by physics of mixing.
-
Parcel nudging to gridded field values with time-scale representing subgrid mixing.

Andy Visser's book on zooplankton ecology (! Chapter 4), provides a nice perspective to mixing, I think.
