@SlotMartijn wondering what your thoughts are on this comment? Maybe I need to mention that some of these are intra-canopy, but are there studies of understory tree and canopy tree of same species for Topt?

@NidhiVinod , these all seem pretty straightforward, but let me know if you have questions.

@NidhiVinod I think this can be addressed by stating clearly that these studies are comparing sun and shade leaves of the same species, or leaves of the same trees along a height gradient. I thought some of the Puerto Rico work was understory species vs overstory species, but I just checked the Mau et al, Miller et al, and Carter et al papers, and all seem to have measurements at different heights for several species. So it would seem that the concern of the reviewer can be addressed by simply saying "within species" "between sun and shade leaves of the same trees" at various points in this section

@SlotMartijn, that is a simple fix, thank you so much! I'll add this into the document

@teixeirak, for this suggestion from the reviewer. I had a reply saying:

is that okay you think, or would it be better to go through the document and keep canopy consistent?

I think it's easier to just clarify throughout the document. I'll do that quickly.

I'll implement the following terminology:

  • canopy = upper layer of tree crowns = overstory
  • top of canopy or upper canopy = upper edge of canopy (all sun-exposed leaves)
  • lower canopy = lower end of canopy
  • understory trees with crowns below the canopy
  • replacing all instances where "canopy" was used to refer to the complete vertical profile with something like forest vertical profile

The "canopy" terminology issue is done. @NidhiVinod , can we close this issue now?

Yes, we can close this issue
