I had to rename an account today, but couldn't because of the following error:

After checking with Magge, we found that we both had the same issue. We use different versions of the mordor client (in my case, 1.2.4).

This issue can be closed since it has been working again for weeks and is currently non-reproducible. I am unsure which commit or PR fixed it, so I cannot provide a reference link.
