Download a new copy of DDLC, install update into it, delete scripts.rpa.
Should fix the problem

Should I backup the "saves" folder first? There seems to be a persistent file there, but it does seem to be an old one, so I don't know if it's the one actually being read.

It won't matter.
Persistents are stored elsewhere aside from saves
