Standalone Operation
Are you running your mainboard as a standalone device. Is standalone mode enabled in the BIOS?
No and no.
Describe the bug
The system works normally for a day or three. Then all of a sudden, it appears like the disk stops working:
- the battery icon turns into a generic square
- when I type a command in a terminal, it says "bash: input/output error"
- when I open the main menu by clicking the little mouse in the upper left, it is blank and the programs that are usually there are not there. The "logout" and "lock screen" buttons have changed to generic icons and when I click them, nothing happens.
- If I try to reload a webpage, Firefox closes all windows and appears to exit.
If I shutdown by long-pressing the power button and then start up again, the system works normally again.
Steps To Reproduce
Just use the laptop normally for a couple of days. Read webpages, connect and disconnect the power supply, hibernate a few times. I do not know how to reliably reproduce the problem on command, but it keeps happening.
Expected behavior
The system functions normally. For example, when I type a command in the terminal, the system should execute that command.
Screenshots
Screenshot doesn't work when the bug manifests. I can post photos of the screen if you need them, but I don't think they would be terribly informative.
Operating System (please complete the following information):
- XUbuntu
- Version: 24.04
- Linux Kernel Version:
uname -a
Linux perezoso 6.8.0-79-generic #79-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Aug 12 14:42:46 UTC 2025 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Ignore the link above. I don't know how to get the system to not insert it; it has nothing to do with this bug.
Additional context
The problem started approximately 3 weeks ago around when I updated the bios from 3.09 to 3.16. I don't remember if it started before or after I updated it though. It could have started while I was still running 3.09. The system has been working fine for the past six months prior.
Also, the system does seem to get pretty hot on the bottom -- not when the bug manifests, but when I'm charging or using lots of CPU. But I have no idea if that's related to this problem.
