74HC595 to extend LEDs connections

Hi all,

I understand that FreeJoy is compatible with 74HC165 to extend buttons connections.
But didn't find anything for 74HC595.
Is it possible to use 74HC595 to extend LEDs connections instead of using LEDs matrix ?

This issue #55 talks about 74HC595.
Opposite that what it is said I find easily this IC and use it a lot in other projects.
