How to handle the (rare) occassions where links should, optionally, open in a new tab

Closed this issue · 6 comments

Standard is to open links within the current tab, but there may be occasions where some users would prefer to open the link in a new tab.

Suggestion: in such cases, offer users two links, one opening in current, one in new tab.

We decide which links open in new tabs, we must put this warning in the link text.

Everything else we leave to the users discretion.

Consider placing something in the Help/About (miscellaneous).

@PatReynolds and @DeniseColbert to pick up which pages they use as "new page" when they are undertaking personal research.

Please bear in mind that users can always choose to open a link in a new tab but they cannot override our decision to do so, i.e. we should set a link to open in a new tab only where it is essential or virtually so.

My view has always been that any link that takes you away from the current site, e,g, a social media link should automatically open in a new tab so that you can easily return to where you were on the original site without needing to hit the back button several times. Users can always close the old tab if they do not want to return to it.

Users will still be able to open in a new tab, but if we force people to open in a new tab, they won't be able to open in the same tab.

Pat did not find any occassion on a FUG site to open in a new tab.

Story now made to capture any instances that do occur, so closing.
