Shouldn't certificates be used to secure communication here?

I'm referring to CA certificates to validate TLS connection described here https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/iot-device-sdk-embedded-c/blob/master/doc/user_guide.md#server-certificate-root-ca-validation
