According deep directory trees there is a different behavior to original file system:
If I use the following script:
test_deep_path ()
{
DEEP_PATH="";
for I in {000..800};
do
DEEP_PATH=$DEEP_PATH${I}/;
done;
mkdir -p $DEEP_PATH;
cd $DEEP_PATH;
mkdir -p $DEEP_PATH;
cd $DEEP_PATH;
pwd | wc -c
}
I can see the following output within the Fuse overlay file system:
[root@visp ftest]# test_deep_path

Within the original file system the output is the following:
[root@visp ftest]# test_deep_path
6423
The issue is that within the Fuse overlay file system operations are performed based on names from the root of the file system (mount point) whereas within the original file system the relative path is used based on the current working directory. Therefore much longer path names can be constructed.

Testing on Fedora 27 with the current fuse3 library code this issue seems being resolved.
