flashed with ST-link, but can't connect GUI to board.

I just received my dev board. I put boot jumpers in place, flashed the .bin with ST-link utility. I see the black screen with the joystick bars on bottom/sides but no activity. cannot connect via ftdi or usb com port to the rcjoy GUI. i have tried with and without jumpers on with both usb and ftdi adapter. same message appears, error unable to connect. any suggestions?

I reflashed and all was ok.
