Published toggle button doesn't change `value` of published

It looks like the value of the published checkbox doesn't propgated to the response somehow.
I took a published pin and changed its status in the UI to unpublished by clicking the button till it was purple and then saved. I was going to try and look in the code but some guy started talking to me and I ran out of time...
