Policy on cross-references

Opened this issue · 2 comments

There has been some discussion in the 七面鳥 entry (https://www.edrdg.org/jmwsgi/entr.py?svc=jmdict&sid=&q=1319520) about the appropriate use of synonyms as cross-references. It might be a good time to look at our cross-reference policy (https://www.edrdg.org/wiki/index.php/Editorial_policy#Cross-References) to see if it needs updating or otherwise amending.

One suggestion I have is to add to the list of useful examples something like:

  • where a term is used relatively rarely when compared to a synonym, then a cross-reference to that synonym may be appropriate

Feel free to comment on the policy and/or suggest amendments.

I have noticed that some japanese words have an equivalent katakana version of the english word.

Example:
随筆 and エッセイ
香辛料 and スパイス
死面 and デスマスク
七面鳥 and ターキー

The english katakana words are often, but not always more common than the japanese counterpart:

随筆 505,500
エッセイ 2,976,150

香辛料 498,569
スパイス 1,655,087

死面 763
デスマスク 22,939

七面鳥 112,040
ターキー 104,080

Most of the kokugos mention those at the end, after the explanation or straight up give the katakana word like in 死面.

I would like to keep adding such xrefs if that's ok.
