LinkedIn authentication for Joomla not working

In the oAuth permissions only r_liteprofile and r_emailaddress can be used.
If replacing them within the plugin code, then if authenticating, the error message appears:
"Provider return empty user code.".
I think the LinkedIn API is changed somehow - can you troubleshoot why this is not working anymore?
