Color of Regular font (font weight 400) too light

Closed this issue · 7 comments

Hello,
first of all many thanks for Montserrat.
I like the font very much.

For regular text I always use a font with font weight 400.

Unfortunately, the color in Montserrat with font weight 400 is not the color defined in the CSS.

For example, I would like to have the text in the color black.
If I use the font Montserrat with the font weight 400 and define as text color the color black, then the text is not displayed in black, but a bit lighter.

I have created the following example for this:
http://lena91567.bplaced.net/400/

the example contains several fonts and the text color is always black.
With Montserrat the font is clearly lighter than with all other fonts.
This is not good in my opinion.
What is your opinion about this?

It would be great if you would create a new version of Montserrat, where the version with the font weight 400 is a bit darker.

How about adding another variant of the font with a font weight of 400, which is slightly darker?

Hello Julieta,

Thank you very much for your answer and your explanations.

Of course I tried the font with the font weight 500 and it is fine regarding the color, but it is also a little bit bigger, but that is usually ok.

@Redondo26
A previous version may work for you.
The weights were changed with v7.200; version 6.002 still has the previous heavier Regular (which may work for you).

The changes are explained on the v7.200 release page: https://github.com/JulietaUla/Montserrat/releases/tag/v7.200
That page includes this Before (v6.002) and After (v7.200) image:

Version 6.002 release is here: https://github.com/JulietaUla/Montserrat/releases/tag/v6.002
That v6.002 400 weight may work for you.

Thank you very much!
This helps me a lot.
Have a nice day!

An unfortunate decision by @davelab6 and Google Fonts to have messed with this typeface’s weight system in the first place.
