Figuring out how to get set up in a VM would facilitate further automating my initial setup, as well as demoing it to others in a reproducible fashion.
I could consider e.g. Vagrant (box) to facilitate machine setup, if not krops or nixops, though I think those start from ssh.

build-vm spits out qemu files like klink.qcow2:

$ sudo nixos-rebuild build-vm

vagrant stuff seems blocked by #100.

apparently you can make VBox stuff too.
