Change software license from GPLv3 to Apache 2.0

Closed this issue · 2 comments

Description

  • This change is being considered to provide more flexibility in terms of how our software can be used and distributed, especially considering our software has already had alpha and beta releases under the GPLv3 license;

Solution

  • Change the software license from GPLv3 to Apache 2.0. This will allow:

    • The software to be used in a wider range of contexts, including in proprietary software;
    • The software to be distributed under more flexible terms, which could encourage wider use and contribution;
    • Compatibility with other popular open source licenses, which could make it easier to integrate with other projects.

Alternative solution(s)

  • N/A

Additional context

  • The Apache 2.0 license is a permissive license that is well-known and widely used in the open source community. It includes explicit grant of patent rights, which is not provided by the GPLv3 license.
