UI elements to separate different replies

It is quite hard to track multiple replies under a toot, due to their homogeneous appearance. This also makes it hard to differentiate a thread from a series of comments.
This could be greatly improved thanks to the addition of UI elements organizing the comments, similar to the ones already present in other sites such as in the Rodent Mastodon app, or in Reddit (see example below).
A second option, which may be used to avoid showing all comments by default, is to use an approach similar to Twitter:
