Extra Space in buffer/filename section

It seems the buffer region is not collapsing for me like I think it should. Check out the attached screenshot; the smaller screen has the entire mode line in it including emms display, clock, and battery. The three buffers on the left show a file with a long path, a grep of all the sml in my init files, and another instance of the scratch buffer.

I've tried playing around with the sml/mode-width but that doesn't seem to be helping. Any ideas about this extra space?

The width of the buffer name section is controlled by the sml/shorten-directory and sml/name-width variables. What values are you using for these?
