Suggestion: Improvement of OGN-Viewer for Useage by Aeromodellers

Hello,
during hang gliding, when a glider or helicoprer is approaching, the aeromodel pilot wants to know the altitude of the glider/helicopter above his own position in order to estimate the safe range of height for the model. I experienced 2 times real cases like this (Bad Tölz/Blomberg and St.Moritz/Alp Giop).
Also when flying at aeromodelling sites the controller sometimes really would appreciate information about fast and low flying aircrafts like ambulance helicopters (which use FLARM equipment at least in the alps and southern Bavaria:-).

This suggestion includes a special display, optimized for a purpouse described above. It would greatly improve OLG-Viewer's useability for aeromodellers:

  • Using only black and white to maximize readibility in bright sunlight,
  • a "radar screen" with a close range circle for estimate of position and course of the aircrafts in up to, say, 2km distance
  • another outer circle in this screen for aircrafts in greater distance up to, say, 10km, just indicating their existence.
  • The center of the "radar screen" is, of course, the GPS position of the android device.
  • A list including more information on aircrafts: There altitudes relative to the position of the OGN-viewer device, an ascending/descending indicator. This list should be sorted, the aircrafts in with altitudes close to the altitude of and those horizontally close to the OGN-Viewer should be displayed in the most prominent places.
  • All this must be displayed without intervention by the perhaps untrained person operating the device.

The sketch may illustrate what I mean: It shows a fictive situation on the Blomberg: I can see a glider above me which would allow me to fly my model glider up to 200m. But another aircraft is coming from North which I can't see because of the hill with the Wackersberger Alm (I know you live in Munich :-) and I must be prepared to land quickly when this aircraft comes closer in order to use the same slope to gain altitude. Another glicer is preparing in Königsdorf in the North and is currently not of concern as is the one enjoying its flight over the Brauneck in South. I just know they are there.

This would help a lot! Air trafic is becoming more and more dense.

Other, advanced features like an audible alarm for aircrafts entering the "inner part of the radar screen" would help even more but should not be regarded in a first step.

I would appreciate a discussion on this topic.
