Space Invaders 2 - neither seems to work

Neither 'Space Invaders II (Midway, cocktail)' (invad2ct) nor 'Space Invader Part II' (invadpt2) seem to start - I keep seeing a blank screen with a recurring attempt to sync to 260x224 x 59.6 Hz.

I had placed the ROMs in /media/fat/_Arcade/mame, but after watching the debug output, realized that the location the core searches, has now changed to /media/fat/games/mame .
Not sure when or why this changed, but when I placed the ROM in the location where it was searching, the game started running.
