What will happen in your session?

Participants will have the opportunity to experience the challenges of being digitally disconnected in three activities that will challenge assumptions around digital skills and access to the internet. In one activity, participants will be tasked with finding a WiFi connection not located in the conference are. In another activity, participants will be tasked with filling out an anonymous job application at a pre-selected website on a smart phone or tablet. A third activity involves participants creating a resume using Google Docs for a randomly chosen job title within 5 - 10 minutes.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of the session is to challenge the assumption participants may have about the digital divide in the United States. There are over 60 million households in the United States that do not have internet in their homes. Most of these families are from either rural areas where infrastructure is minimal or from low-income urban area where quality internet service is unaffordable. In both situations, relevant digital literacy skills are low or non-existent. The goal is to begin a conversation about social inequities that occur within the digital divide and how native digital adopters can serve as allies in closing the gap.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

I would like space to place additional laptops for participant's use for the activities, to explore digital inclusion advocacy websites and to sign-up to applicable listservs. I would like access to a wireless printer for those who would rather have paper in hand.
