What will happen in your session?

We will look into learning the basics of programming through a javascript library - p5.js.
The session will be broken down into 2 parts. First, participants will be introduced to the idea of coding through unplugged activities. This will enable participants to talk about computer and "algorithms" before we begin to code. The second part of the session will be more hands on where participants will be guided through a set of tutorials that will teach them the basics of p5. Post this, we will take a few minutes to discuss the possible applications of what we learnt along with projects that can be done with this - such as a coded "Paint by Numbers"

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The goal of the sessions is as follows -

  • To provide participants with a basic understanding of what code is and how it can be used in creative applications
  • Participants will learn the basics of p5.js
  • Ultimately, they will all be working on a coded version of "Paint by Numbers"
  • We also want people to think of how code can be used in "non-traditional" ways

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We will require attendees to bring their devices, plus a projector.

Time needed

90 mins

Hey @MathuraMG!

This sounds really interesting. Can you elaborate on what you mean by the 'idea of coding through unplugged activities'? Also, do you absolutely need 90 mins, or could you do it in 60?

What sort of devices do participants need? We'd like to allow those who attend without computers to participate, so it'd be good to know it it'd be possible to do on e.g. raspberry pis with screens, or mobile phones.

Hi @jontutcher - apologies for the delay! It would be possible to complete in 60 minutes, that would mean rush through a few concepts, but surely possible!

Unfortunately, since we would like to introduce participants to programming, participants would need access to a keyboard, so phones won't be great. They will however be able to participate in the unplugged activities.

@estherhersh

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest.

Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

You'll receive a follow up email from us in the next few days.
