Sync question

Hi,
I understand that sync should no longer matter, but I noticed if I shut port 44158 my miner went to a relayed status and eventually was showing offline where I’ve had no activity since. Furthermore, if I leave the port open and looking at my traffic logs it appears the rak unit is moving lots of data over the wire. Which leads me to further confusion.. can someone EIL5 and clear this up for me?
