For running downloads, use selected save folder as temp folder

I'm sorry , I don't know where asking a question which is nor a bug nor a feature request

Some months ago, the temporary files where stored in the "download " folder
When there was a crash, for any reason, I deleted the temporary files which were not automatically deleted.

Now in which folder are stored these temporary files?
My system disk is almost full ; I'd like to check whether temporary files are still somewhere

Thank you

On Windows, they are stored in ~\AppData\Local\Temp.

On Linux, they are stored in ~\.cache

Thank you!

yes , a lot of large file to be suppressed!

The Temp folder is where every application on your system, not just Parabolic, will store temporary files.

Usually the Disk Cleanup utility is the best way to clean up this folder instead of manually deleting in that folder.

It's funny, I'm exactly in the same situation, struggling all the time to save some space on my 128 GB C, while I still have a comfortable 500 GB free on my D. And this afternoon, I've emptied this Temp folder for the first time, saving a precious 5 GB, and there were indeed large failed Parabolic downloads over there.

I suppose that an option to let user decide where to store these temporary files, possibly on the D, wouldn't be possible? Because, in my case, given this terrible (and absolutely not recommended, I know) lack of free space on my C, I'm prevented from downloading big files. While I could do it if these temporary files were stored on the D, my Downloads folder being also on the D.

I can change the temp folder back to whatever you select for downloads - but just note that in some cases (especially during validation due to a yt-dlp change) there will be files written to this Temp folder still.

Oh yes, it would be nice. :-) As long as it doesn't bring us back this hard-to-fix recent bug #1282 , why not?

But will these files still written in this Temp folder be big ones? Will they be, in case of videos, the videos themselves, maybe in a kind of temporary raw, non-compressed nor merged state? Or, will it just be during validation, and then we aren't talking about GBs?

This is why validation will still write files in the Temp folder.

It will be this. Where validation usually downloads a bunch of json files when parsing media formats and then deletes them after.

OK, perfect then, thanks a lot for this ๐Ÿ™‚ That'll be really helpful to me.

Hi, it's great to add this capital option of "use selected save folder as temp folder" to save our cheap SSD or old HDD. Thank you very much, Mr. @nlogozzo !! ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๐Ÿฅ‡

I already made the same request to the great media player team : "mpc-qt" which uses yt-dlp, and I even opened an issue in the yt-dlp repository and received lots of interesting suggestions and responses.....
Maybe it could help to implement this new feature of using selected save folder as temp folder! :

mpc-qt/mpc-qt#465

yt-dlp/yt-dlp#13496

Parabolic V2025.9.0 is here with a fix for this issue!

Please allow for some time for it to be available via Flathub

Awesome !! Thanks Mr Nlogozzo ! ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๐Ÿ’ฏ
