SPP: update for 2014

Closed this issue · 8 comments

See existing work which turned up few differences: #37.

From @katlongo...

OHI 2014 – remaining to dos:

  • To process:
    • IUCN update (SPP): BB to help re-run (name mismatches dealt with by filtering “parent” assessment)
    • Aquamaps update (SPP): BB to verify if new format is easy to work with, if so, and if time, recalculate with updated maps

OHI 2014 - extended:

  • IUCNspp from Mel/BB? (SPP contribute to: ecological resilience at eez and 3nm scales, IUCNspp status/trend, sense of place-ICO status/trend)
    • IUCN data: some differences in db organization had to be resolved (15 differences, most due to updates in sciname, a few changed category – species id may identify multiple populations) (ohicore issue #37). It appears that this was resolved (ohicore issue #17)
    • Results in: NCEAS-SpeciesDiversity_v2014

from @katlongo:
...
2) IUCN status update (SPP): if possible
...
4) Aquamaps species distributions update (SPP): I propose to hold off, since there is limited time and this would introduce new differences from OHI2013, unrelated to species status change

Aquamaps update should just be left out of the list, unless BH object to this choice.

Hi BB,

Issue #37 is listed in the text you quote below, but I think it’s missing a table that condenses all of the information you sleuthed: a table with consistent taxon names that changed status (or are new).
Table 1 has the count of changes in status (a total of 15), but not per species. Then the last 2 tables show taxon names that have changed status, but they differ depending on whether the search is by id (only 1 record), or by sciname (7100). You explain how this is due to a renaming issue in some cases, and presence of subpopulations in other cases.
What we’re missing is a final summary, without subpopulations, and using consistent scinames in both years, that tells us what species changed extinction status or have a new status.
Even if we end up not updating this piece, it’ll be useful to have this table for documentation purposes.

On Googledoc spreadsheet DataUpdateMatrices_OHI_2014a it says: [1] AquaMaps SPP diversity: http://aquamaps.org/download/high_res_maps.php. But getting not found error when downloading. MF to search for valid URL or download / BB to email. Found usable URL here: http://www.incofish.org/results/maps.php. [2] http://www.iucnredlist.org/technical-documents/spatial-data
How are these matched to maps? How are the contradicting ids/scinames resolved?
BB can help re-run (just filter by “parent”)
Issue with format of input file: can we publish the source data? sqLite file?
What about AquaMaps updates? Should we use them? Can Jamie help out on this task?
BB to evaluate if the new format is easy to work with (if time)

Hi @katlongo, please scroll down in issue #37 and you will find these tables:

  • species new to 2014 by scientific name (sciname)
  • species missing in 2014 but present in 2013, by scientific name (sciname)

Feel free to comment further, and I'll investigate next week.

I saw those, and mentioned them in my email - I don’t think the table I described is currently included in this summary, and it would be great to have.
