Issue

A visually hidden table is present to convey the diagram that displays the deprivation percentages of Adur. There is a visual caption of ‘Range and population weighted average...’ that is not programmatically associated to the table, and screen reader users may not know that it is related to the table contents. A similar instance applies to the table on the page titled ‘The 20 local authorities with the smallest gap between their most and least income- deprived neighbourhoods.’.

Screen reader comments:
“I examined the 2 tables under the heading ‘Largest and smallest income gaps’ and found that neither were preceded by a clear heading/ title/ caption. However, what appeared to be a title was positioned below each table.”

Suggested Solution

Captions that are associated to table contents must be programmatically paired. Ensure that the caption element is contained within the table element.
