I want to test out the showcase here using the virtual environment setup you have. Thing is, I'm afraid it won't work and it'll end up corrupting my files. Any secure work-around?

You don't need to worry. Just follow the instructions carefully. If you are afraid that the examples will corrupt your files, setup a virtual machine on your computer. Virtualization is a common approach that will help you to create a "separated" system. You can run the examples on that virtualized system and any of your files will be at stake.
