Pillars of Eternity won’t start—and no other Steam games have higher resolution options

v0.21.2136
- Windows 8.1
- Running as admin
- Installed to
C:\Program Files\GeDoSaTo\
- Visual-whatsit is installed
- Logs are empty
- I can run Pillars of Eternity just fine, when it’s deactivated, but not when it’s active.
I also tried with Sid Meier’s Pirates, which is probably unsupported anyway, but it boots fine but without any higher res option. It also uses a slider for resolution on top of requiring 4:3, because the UI doesn’t stretch, so I wasn’t expecting it to work.
I also tried
- The Beginner’s Guide
- Elite Dangerous
- Cities: Skylines
- Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
and no higher resolutions were available there either.
-
EDIT: Also just tried Final Fantasy XIII which wouldn’t run with it on.
Update: Ran it as admin, and it works. This didn’t work for Pillars and Pirates, though, but I’ll go back and check all the games again. Well, it loads anyway, because the performance is dreadful, but that’s the game’s dreadful port for ya.
There is not baseline game for GeDoSaTo to test (which would be great; something like Half-Life 2 or something would be swell), so I just tested what was available.
It seems like it’s not something specific to my games but a general problem—or both.
Let me know if I’ve missed something or can give you some logs or whatever. :)
EDIT: I guess I was running admin on the shortcut icons instead of the files inside the Steam folder? If I were to speculate.
On a side note, the updater always tries to perform an initial installation of the program instead of updating it, which I imagine is now the intended functionality. So I can’t run an update to see if it works, or if there’s something more recent than on the website.
