The fauxcurrence package by @ogosborne has really smart pseud-absence generation, that could be implemented here.

The original package is GPL so no one who has looked at the code touches this discussion; all info to reproduce the behaviour has to come from the preprint. Vignette status unclear as they are part of the package.
