Read From Uart

Hello guys,
I want to test the factorial.c program but with reading the number from the uart interface (putty or whatever) anyone tried to do that before ? the thing is i need to write my own read function but still got no result so far
Any help or any idea on how to maybe approach this would be appreciated .
