Nultiy?

I am puzzled about the nulity term. It seems it is the number of filled variables.

I found this statement in the readme:

"I additionally define nullity to mean whether a particular variable is filled in or not."

Now, we know it is the one or the other, but which one is it?
It is like answering to an or question with yes. :-)
