Syncing volumes / plugins

Does anybody use a consistent method for sharing volumes with the host system? Also looking into how the new plugin system in Docker 0.12 as a more customized way to deal with it. Even syncing the volumes on host is not ideal. I still don't understand volume container... - but sharing volume containers with other containers that could refresh the cache or save modules in a database or s3 ` is the goal
