Show error message to user instead of crashing if project JSON file cannot be parsed

As a user I'd like the GUI to tell me when it has failed to load a project - and remind me that this can happen, e.g., if I'm trying to load newer version of the JSON file with an oder version of the GUI - instead of crashing.
